Re: Found a 10 foot long Rat Snake shed in TN. How big was the snake???
A good rule of thumb is that sheds are 25-30% longer than the snake's length. In some cases sheds can be 50% longer than the snake. I'd guess your rat snake is a 7-8 foot animal. Which is a LONG snake. Like you, I've seen hundreds of rat snakes. A few were over 6 feet long. The thing about those lon...

afaik there aren't any documented atrox x scutulatus or scutulatus x oreganus hybrids. There is a hybrid zone in New Mexico where scutulatus x viridis hybrids are regularly found. ruber and atrox are each others closest relatives. It makes sense that there would be some hybridization where they co-o...

Crotalus atrox. On C. scutulatus the white bands are twice as wide as the black bands.
Habitat can be another clue. C. scutulatus prefers flat areas with deep soils. Its almost never found near rocks or steep mountainous terrain.

I haven't been on that road in a long time. Its beautiful country, with some really special snake species and cool wildlife. I bet the border issues have really affected the area. Its remote and unpaved iirc. So be ready for that. But its a graded road and I made it with a low clearance 2wd.

Mountain kingsnakes are hard to find everywhere in their range. Give yourself plenty of time and grace and try to enjoy the process. First, find a spot where you are confident they occur. This could be a place where someone else has seen a kingsnake or really good habitat. Plan on spending some sear...

The mohave desert is tough in the fall. Any chance you can go a bit further south into the sonoran desert? For rattlesnakes, I'd plan to road cruise as much as possible. Twenty five years ago, early May in southern Ohio I found my first timber rattlesnake. It was on steep rocky point overlooking the Ohio river. Headland and Greene's paper on snake attacks is interesting. In spite of the high rate of attacks by giant pythons, I don't think there were any successful ingestions of adults.
