Similar to the lyre snake, I was partial to the tiger snake (Telescopus semiannulatus) after seeing one in Namibia. What a cool snake. Unlikely to ever become popular just like every other lizard specialist. Calabars are too difficult to breed, but doable. Their small clutch size, fossorial nature a...

Re: Inbreeding in herpetoculture

I do not know if they can correctly be called umbilical cords but they do have a cord like structure that connects them to the yolk and another to the amniotic sac. Both are attached at the ventral side of the gut. Much of this is not observed since it is in the egg, but with live bearing species it...

Deleterious genes are typically rare in populations, especially lethal ones. The idea that inbreeding will automatically lead to some gross defect is misleading. Certainly the risk is increased but the possibility is still small. Further with so little known about nutrition in snakes, inbreeding bec...

Best way I have found to control Argentine ants is to find the nest and spot treat after flooding. Often I find nests when watering. Why are they using pyrethrin? It is fairly ineffective outdoors since it decomposes rapidly in sun light. It will likely be non-toxic to reptiles since its synthetic analog permethrin is commonly used to treat mites and has low acute toxicity. A more direct impact will be against the insects that th...
