Based on some other photos I am fairly confident that this snake has 15 scales across the middle of the body ..... so Drepanoides?

Thanks everyone! i'll share a photo tonight. I hope I have enoigh photo evidence to make a possitive ID! i didn't realize there were so many possibilities until I returned home or I could have done a simple, on the spot, scale count :(! But now I know, and hopefully others can reference this as well!

I'm wondering about the small red snakes with the exact same colour pattern. And my question has nothing to do with range. I'd lean towards Dendropsophus microcephalus, but I am a bit rusty. Was it found in either the Canal Zone or the dry coastal area west of the City?

There are plenty of great trails near Gamboa. There are some local guides but most specialize in birds. They will show up some day.. I found both of those within 5km of the resort there. Both were in the rainy season in Sept. Mario also flipped a young porthidium under a dry piece of wood in similar habitat in Aguadulce that same week. It was in similar disturbed habitat. Keep an eye out for Phimophis...

Fog lights question.

Does anybody find that these help herp visibility? I would imagine they may not help for things that are far away but maybe they cast a bit of a shadow on herps as the car rolls up on them?

Hockey bag with wheels. Fits everything .. literally you could travel with a kitchen sink if you wanted. As long as I'm within weight I have never had a problem with the size.

Look for grassy clearings in low lying forest which does not flood. If it floods the vegetation will probably not be right. I think grass, moisture and insects are probably the main factors. Besides the sickness, sounds like you had a good visit in Panama! Hope the family is all well! That Leptophis is a pretty cool find! Looks pretty close to what I called a Leptophis nebulosus from El Cope. The elevation sounds right too. I'm not sure if there are any good diagnostics to tell it apart...
