Rye, Don't get discouraged by just finding tracks, it takes some practice. Keep following them and eventually you will find a sidewinder at the end of them. Marc - Most of the sidewinders in this area do have pinkish coloration, but of course there can be quite a bit of variation. Ive seen some that are more gray or tan as well.

There are long delays down the gorge if you hit it at a bad time, but the last few times I went through it just slows down to 35 mph for a about 1 mile and then everything was back to normal. What you will find depends on the weather and rainfall, but for the most part you should be able to find something to make your trip worthwhile. I think the photo of a speck from Lake Mead NRA that Jimi is referring to is actually from the south side of the Lake on the way to the west rim of the Grand Canyon. Jimi, As far as that date goes, I would say its about as good as any to pick if your planning this far in advance. The only risk is if we get a really warm Spring many of the snakes will have dispersed further from their dens by then, making it harder to find them out during the day, but it might be...

I also thought the patch-nosed was more brown and yellowish than any I remember seeing around here. But it was also the largest I've ever seen in Utah, so maybe that's part of it.
