Interesting observations. From page 22: "The variability in morphology and color pattern noted in ornatum seems indicative of the postulated mixed ancestry of this form. It is generally accepted that introgressive hybridization is an important source of genetic variability for adaptive evolutio...

Re: Horned Lizard ID request

It would be great to find an academic interested enough in this stuff, to get the funding and the students and the permits to actually challenge this purely-morphological arrangement with some molecular information. Info that's more current than just mtDNA. I guarantee numerous academics would be i...

Sounds like C. o. abyssus is the favored ID. Thanks, folks! And to clarify, Coyote Gulch is quite a bit north of the Paria drainage.

Read the Montanucci paper to understand what his revision means regarding the composition of P. ornatissimum as currently understood. Figure 6 on page 24 provides distributions of the taxa.

Re: Horned Lizard ID request

For clarification, P. ornatissimum does not occur in Utah. In the Navajo Res. area, however, individuals are supposedly hybrids between P. hernandesi and P. ornatissimum.

Rattlesnake ID

This one was taken in Coyote Gulch, about 1.5 km west of the Escalante. Any expert opinions?

Re: Horned Lizard ID request

Montanucci recently published a taxonomic revision for this group (http://squamates.blogspot.com/2015/09/new-taxonomic-arrangement-for-short.html), and that has led to some changes in species numbers within Utah (e.g., P. brevirostris ). He also documents P. douglasii in Box Elder Co. http://i85.pho...

S. intermontana has also been considered S. hammondii in the past. My guess is that the "S. hammondii" records west of the Colorado River refer to S. intermontana, but that is speculative, of course.

As far as I know, S. multiplicata is only known from San Juan County in Utah. While I'm no expert, I see no reason to think it's anything but S. intermontana. In which county was that found?
