I would scoop up the tin!! Layer it 4 deep, snakes will use the cover for longer periods of time if they can thermoregulate in the pile without leaving. Construction dumpsters are great sources for scrap plywood.
Good luck!

Warm winter here so far, just skim ice that melts every day. Getting some perch and smallies jigging on edges. But it's slow going.

I like to collect my own sphagnum. What part of ct are you in? It can be pretty easy to find. It re-grows very quickly, so as long as you don't beat a spot up you can collect without causing any damage to an area.

I would not use ladybugs. The bright color being a tip off that they may be poisonous or at least taste horrible. Flies, moths and spiders are usually pretty safe.
Kelly, I try to be very fussy with fly cultures. The slightest hint of mold and in the trash they go.

I always used sphagnum that I collected. The snakes seemed to like burrowing in the nest box. I always found the eggs under the moss or in the center. I never gave choices for a nesting site, but never had problems with egg retention. I liked sphagnum because it doesn't mold and is naturally sterile...
