Another friend purchased a collapsible aluminum walking stick. It works fine for helping to position a snake for a photo and probably appears a bit more innocuous to TSA or other baggage inspectors. I was pretty shocked as well. Even for those with insurance, people with the most basic plans often have a high deductible, so they're still pretty well screwed should they need these medications.
