Re: First Snake of the year and few from 2016
I agree with prairie kings being the least frequently encountered. It's strange, because they are a widespread snake and not rare my any means, I just happen to see a lot more specks and milks comparatively. That said, I only got the trifecta once last year, and what a day it was overall! When you'r...

I gotta say, you have some really nice shots here. The bull and fox snakes stand out really well! It makes me excited to get out and enjoy this season.

Awesome post Gary! Always good to see another Missouri glade herper post what they find. That set up with the shingles under the tin is a pretty good idea that I would like to try out some time if I ever get the tin and a place to do it.
Did you see any coachwhips last season?

Late Spring to Summer in Missouri
I find that as the herping season moves into hotter weather, I am less inclined to take pictures and less patient when doing so. As things really warmed up in Missouri, I visited an igneous glade one day with my friends Kyle and Edward. Kyle and I spent a half an hour trying to scare this big boy ou...

Thanks! It's funny, because all of the stuff I think is really cool around here is generally pretty common everywhere else. I guess it's really a circumstantial kind of thing. I never get to see mud snakes, so even though they are pretty common, it's awesome to see them.

An Ambitious Start to 2015 in the Lower Midwest
2014 was definitely 'light' in terms of herping. Much of my time was spent with other endeavors, such as getting married last September. I predicted way back in the beginning that this year (2015) would be much bigger comparatively speaking. And thus far, it certainly has been! The first big outing ...

That mystery one is definitely a melanistic red-eared slider. Around St. Louis sliders are the most abundant turtle to turn up in ponds and reservoirs, and melanistic males are pretty common.

I really like your pictures here! The ringed sallies, racer, ground snake, alligator snapper, and, of course, coachwhip shots are great! And it was good meeting up with you. I would say being sick was a bigger bummer for me than not finding our target species. I know they are around, and that we hav...

I don't often post on here. That being said, I ended up with some spare time tonight, and given the temperature outside is below 35 degrees, I figured making a post would really give me closure for a good year. That is one pretty looking bull snake. I've come very close on two seperate occasions to finding one of those, but missed the actual snake by just a bit. I know cats will kill any of the smaller snakes in the area, but have you seen any of their interactions with a large bull snake? I'm sure that wo...

Joe: The definition of 'thick' for racers or coaches I'm sure is relative to each person's experiences. To best see what I'm talk about, you can generally see a difference in proportional girth when looking at juvies or subadults versus older adults. While the former aforementioned are generally ver...

Re: 'Chunking'
It would make sense. I've noticed that generally longer snakes are typically thicker, so maybe it also has something to do with a slower growth rate length-wise. To elaborate, every unusually thick racer or whip I've seen seems to be three foot plus for a racer, or five foot plus for a coachwhip-- w...

'Chunking'
I've found this term in a couple of books, and on more than a few websites discussing racers and coachwhips. From what I understand, chunking is when a generally slender snake becomes bulkier. If that's inaccurate, correction would be awesome! Anyways, my main question is, when does chunking happen ...

This is the perfect post for this time of the year-- it gets me anxious for what I will (hopefully) be experiencing in a short few months. Re: Coachwhips are fast.
Coachwhips are, beyond a doubt, my favorite snakes. After looking for several years, I finally located a spot that yielded coachwhips (albeit sparsely) last year. Unfortunately, the only ones I saw were juvies and subadults. This year, however, I found this beast, a full 65ish inches and nearly 2 in...

It's always great to see kids interested in snakes and other herps. Even if it's just a phase that they grow out of, generally that fascination and information that they've picked up lingers with them, and you have one more person who relocates a snake to the woods instead of chopping its head off w...
