It totally depends on the species and the particular situation that species is facing. I'm not arguing that Rubber Boa populations can't handle a certain level of harvest, but other species cannot. With Flickr, you can retain exclusive copyrights, release your image to the public domain, or do anything you want in between. Also, the compression algorithms they use make the images look much better than those hosted on Photobucket. I really wish Photobucket would die in a fire.

Red-breasted Sapsucker or hybrid?

I get plenty of different woodpeckers at my house, but this Red-breasted Sapsucker I got yesterday was actually a new yard bird for me (I live in the wrong habitat for them). Everything about its appearance matches the northern subspecies of Red-breasted Sapsucker, except the band of mottled feather...

Your gigantic mushrooms, BTW, are Omphalotus olivascens, the Western Jack-o'-Lantern... If you return to the site at night, you'll probably see them glowing in the dark (a really cool opportunity to work with long exposures on your camera).

Owen - I do not see anything in the head/eye shape of the first garter that suggests T. atratus . The head is very short and round with internasals that are wider than they are long... It's possible, however, young T. a. atratus often have a sharp line between their lateral and ventral coloration that can give the appearance of being multi-striped. That line typically becomes obscured as the snake ages and darkens in color. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2743/5778923997_cc60f7494f....

Nice finds, guys. :thumb: Both of the garters are T. elegans ... The first one you can tell because of the enlarged rear upper labial scales and short internasals. The second is definitely a T. elegans as well because of the bright red ( T. atratus never has red on it). The gopher is an awesome find!

Given how poisonous newts are, is the final or next intermediate host of the trematode a garter? Or do the parasites typically target other salamanders and the infection of the newt is just incidental?
