Nice looking turtles, but they don't like being held for 45+ minutes. When their heads are in their shells - they're stressed out and aren't able to breath. Great photos, it's nice having an early start, though I'm concerned by the recent cold snap here in Southern Ontario as several anurans have already laid egg masses in the small puddles which are usually vernal pools this time of year.

Having gone around searching for Massasaugas in Michigan, and only every really finding a handful, it's hard to believe that Michigan is the stronghold for the species. As an aside, snapping turtles do not "hiss", the sound you're refering to is the animal expelling air from it's lungs so that it can retract it's head. Not at all like a Hognose snake for example.
