Love the fox snake. I guess if you have to vacation in NW Ohio, this is the time of year to do it! My family is from the Toledo area and I lived in NW Ohio in the late 80's/early 90's. The metropark system there is really nice.

Great post. The diversity of NW salamanders is amazing and the habitats in which they are found are absolutely gorgeous. I am able to find Oregon Ensatinas and Del Nortes in my yard and several other species within just a mile or two.

In the southwest (AZ and NM), we used to find them in small pools at the bottom of cave entrance pits. Sometimes a 100+ ft vertical drop from the entrance. It's likely they out lived their entire lives without leaving the cave entrance.
