Hi All,
Apologies if some of you have seen this before, but I thought I'd share a link to a recent video I made covering the frosted flatwoods salamander after working on them for 8 months last year. Enjoy!

Great thread. I was fortunate enough to get my lifer Eastern spadefoot in Indiana last year. They have a fairly limited range in Indiana and at this site they breed right in the middle and edges of soybean fields. https://c7.staticflickr.com/1/306/18820611558_09e1a78366_c.jpg Eastern Spadefoot Toad ...

Thanks everyone! The Leopard does resemble a pickerel, but it was 100% leopard in person. For the darter shot, I used a special "teaching photographic tank" I got from Carolina lab supply. It's v shaped and makes photographing aquatic life very simple. I put a black cloth behind it for the...

Sorry I can't really help for OH spots, but as far as the behavior of texanum in the Midwest: Chances of finding an adult in late July are not particularly good. So far, 2015 has been an awesome, jam packed year. Spending the winter in Northern Indiana was tough because winter herping is impossible most of the time. I always grasp the tail while holding the turtle out as far away from my body as possible with the other hand supporting the underside. This is the safest, easiest way for both you and the turtle in my opinion. The head can't reach you. It's possible for them to claw you up a little but that's just ...

Guessing based on your size comment that they are bull/green frog tadpoles from last year. They take 1-2 years to mature and so often overwinter as tadpoles, and can be seen basking in the shallows in early spring.

Most of the salamanders will be active. Even if temps dip below freezing or there is still snow on the ground, you can find them in the streams. I highly recommend this book, it has a lot of detailed information on the species in the park. http://www.amazon.com/Amphibians-Great-Smoky-Mountains-Natio...
