As editor for Herp Nation I will echo Scott's comments, that while we are not an academically peer reviewed journal we are very proud of the high quality content we choose to publish. That being said, I am a professional biologist (and life-long avid herpetoculturist), and I gave a former supervisor...

You might also look at temperature. A friend of mine who is a well known breeder of green tree pythons (among others) was having a lot of trouble years ago with full term dead in the egg. He started dropping the temp down from 89 F to 86 F in the last few weeks of incubation and as a result had a mu...

Sam, those are some good looking phayrei ! Thanks for sharing. Thanks Berkeley. There is actually just the one though. Two pictures of the same animal about a year apart. The second picture shows the new growth rings. It's probably a male but I am not 100% sure on that. Two people who's opinions I ...

Re: Stolen Tortoises-- UPDATE!
Glad to hear that there is at least some good news here. I always worry about theft. It was bad enough that I had to secure all of my outdoor turtles against raccoons after many years with no problems (lost 5 to them two summers ago), I'd hate to have to deal with the human factor.

I haven't tried it, but I have heard of people using it. I put a thin layer of wood pellets (wood stove pellets or stall pellets) on the bottom of the rodent cages and pine shavings (I've always used pine shavings) on top. The wood pellets really cut down on the smell.

Yes, phorid flies are what I get from time to time in the summer. I never used to have them until I had a cricket colony. I think they came in with the crickets and I haven't truly been able to get rid of them since (though I can keep the numbers way down by keeping things clean). I will try the abo...

What about night time temps? Do you shut off all heat? I heard they can handle (maybe need) big nighttime drops, like in the 50's. I haven't really been doing that actively, though the room cools at night on its own. It is true that they can handle temps even into the low 40's at night as long as t...

Thanks everyone. Husbandry is really pretty straightforward. Since they are only available as CH these days (which is a good thing) you don't have a lot of the problems that wild caught animals had back when they were being imported. They should be kept cooler than typical pythons (colubrid temps), ...

The acidity inhibits bacterial and fungal growth, so that is a plus. It does take a little attention to keep it from drying out though (as was mentioned above).
