Re: Rattlesnake Trying to Eat a Rodent

Its not too big, he just needs some shade & privacy. Funny as when I started watching he was out in the sun but eventually dragged it into the shade of where I was crouched over. I stayed very very still and I'm sure he just thought of me as a part of the landscape at that point. He did drag it...

Rattlesnake Trying to Eat a Rodent

Hi all, I've posted a short version of this video before but just finished going through all my footage and decided to make a longer edit. If anyone is interested in seeing this bit of natural behavior, here it is. A small (yearling) Northern Pacific Rattlesnake desperately tries to consume a rodent...

Adventures in Rattlesnake Photography

Hi everyone, I don't post here too often, but I do lurk frequently. I thought I'd make a post now that the season is wrapping up here in British Columbia. This herping season has been an absolute blast. I was able to get intimately familiar with what has become my favorite species, the Northern Paci...

Re: Okanagan Country

Wish I'd had even just one more night there, what a place! Yeah the Okanagan is pretty awesome! it's the tiny bit of the country that resembles the deserts of the south. Also - I've just added your instagram page to my thankyou at the end of my report (if anyone does indeed ever get that far!) - Yo...

Awesome photos, Chad! As someone who is still just starting out in wildlife/herp photography, I’ve been looking at your body of work with such awe and inspiration.

Keep it up!

Richard, that's great to hear. I actually found a DOR rubber boa last year right near Westwold. Perhaps I will find a live one in the area this season.

Re: What is Herping? Why I do it. - A short Documentary film

Wow, really awesome video! This captures the feeling of success and deep satisfaction that one can get from herping.

I really like the part about enjoying/harassing nature. There is a line there, and it's important for people to not cross it and overhandle the snakes. You said it perfectly.

Re: Google Earth

Not sure if it's what people have mentioned in the past, but I can certainly vouch for Google Earth. It's an awesome program. I use it to scope out new areas, rocky slopes, old buildings and large artificial cover objects will be visible as well. Also, I use it to mark locations of where I found dif...

Re: Baby rattlesnakes basking at thier den (Video)

An interesting test - if you take a look from afar, go away for about just a few minutes, and come back for another look - see if they have moved. I have seen (when I'm too close...) that snakes won't move when I'm watching from an intermediate distance, but as soon as the coast is clear they get o...

Re: Baby rattlesnakes basking at thier den (Video)

Wow that sure looks like a lot of the country around here. Exactly like it. Good on ya for working through this puzzle. Feels good, eh? Absolutely! This discovery is the culmination of everything ive been working towards this summer, herping wise. It's location will be a closely guarded secret. I d...

Baby rattlesnakes basking at their den (Video)

After lots of searching I finally came across a rattlesnake den site and observed some brand new babies near the entrance. Upon the initial discovery three snakes were observed at the entrance, and when returning 30 mins later two additional individuals were also seen. This video features the only t...

Re: Cruising advice for NorPacs, Gophers, and Rubber Boas

I'm still trying to figure out what looks like a blue color on the first rattle segment. The mark is used for identification, and to determine how many sheds have occurred since the mark was placed there by researchers. The snake also likely has at least a PIT tag, if not a radio tracker implanted....

Re: Cruising advice for NorPacs, Gophers, and Rubber Boas

Hi all, I want to post an update here. Thanks to the replies on this thread, and other info found throughout this forum, I’ve had a really great past couple months of cruising. I’ve gone from never having seen a rattlesnake, to now having found 18 in the field since I first posted at the end of May....

Re: Cruising advice for NorPacs, Gophers, and Rubber Boas

Well with all these tips in mind I can happily say I've been having success these past few nights. I've found a couple rattlesnakes, but last night actually cruised a Valley garter snake at around 11pm which was a surprise as I thought they wouldn't be active at night. I also saw a fresh DOR Rubber ...

Re: Cruising advice for NorPacs, Gophers, and Rubber Boas

I'll definitely switch my herping time to the evenings now, based on the info I've gotten here. Thanks! An other idea I would like to get thoughts on: In regards to pressure changes, I wonder if changing pressure may be beneficial to finding snakes on the move. I've read some research papers on Goph...

Cruising advice for NorPacs, Gophers, and Rubber Boas

Hi there, First time poster, long time lurker on this forum. This summer I've gotten into herping, and this website along with a few others has proven invaluable to my education. There are six species that live where I am in the North Okanagan in British Columbia. These are the Northern Pacific Ratt...
