Re: Rattlesnake depicted in Afghanistan in Lone Survivor
As we know many things in Hollywood aren't always what they seem. I never saw the movie but to someone editing the film a viper is a viper in their mind so the animal got it's moment of fame. An eagle fly's over and one hears the call of a red tailed hawk. Heck a falcon can fly by and sound much lik...

Re: Law Enforcement looking to catch herpers in Arizona
The state of Arizona as with many states needs to rethink its collection and captive breeding policies to encourage the breeding of native reptile's not eliminate it. The way to stop illegal collection is too make legal animals more available. Not the opposite. Ernie Eison Falconers certainly have ...

17 years ago one of my daughter’s, myself and two friends were hiking in South Dakota’s Cave Hills. That day the forecast temperature was to reach 108 F so we wanted to get an early start and be back in camp before noon. I forgot to mention one of my friends was a Brit so all this was new to him. On...

Re: Gyrfalcon on Oregon coast
I guess someone saw a pretty neat gyrfalcon in SD. I hadn't checked that forum for a while but did today out of curiousity. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/sd-birds/conversations/messages/16592 Here's the picture: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMGBHldHNssgDPpGj1ImYX9rw0YqYlTQgE7Fp3tU0tDEL...

Re: Gyrfalcon on Oregon coast
Brad, The 'Chat' is the newsletter for the Audubon Society of Corvallis. In the latest Dec. issue of the Chat, it mentions another Gyrfalcon having been observed a number of times in neighboring Linn County just east of where I live in Corvallis, Oregon. The observer is Jeff Fleischer who does rapt...

Re: Gyrfalcon on Oregon coast
"I have no understanding why birders would consider the Gyrfalcon as a ‘sensitive’ species when the species regularly occurs in Oregon during the winter months. Perhaps they have fears that some falconer would try trapping ‘their’ Gyr." I suspect your right on that account but some folks d...

Re: Gyrfalcon on Oregon coast
Hi Richard, I’m afraid I made a mistake. That picture was taken by another birder in Troy, Oregon on the 16th of December. That being said I did find out that the good folks at ebird don’t like publishing pictures of what they consider a “sensitive” species ie gyrfalcon in this case. I too couldn’t ...

Re: Gyrfalcon on Oregon coast
Hi Richard, Is this the picture? If it is it’s an immature gyr. It’s not a particularly dark bird considering some are almost black. This bird is much like the birds I saw in South Dakota. https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPJz8Z0SY6MqDalvtfxUC_LNuZ5jtcqwulvklDtSeyqZzNaf7gRlt97suLZSotLDQ?key=elpT...
