Borneo 2017
In July I was lucky enough to spend a week in two locations in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, for a macrophotography workshop. Although I shot lots of bugs, we found a few reptiles and amphibians as well. It was my second trip to Borneo, and I really hope I get a chance to go again.

Re: So Cal So Far (Mojave, SD County, Tejon Ranch, etc.)
Tons of cool stuff. I love the wide angle images and the night skies -- it's always nice to see not just the critters, but the world around them as well.

Re: Mojave Springtime
Thank you, and sure. Basically, I have a dedicated hand-held macro setup that's great for tiny things like bugs, but which I find can help me get interesting closeups of "big" animals like lizards. These photos were all shot with a Nikon D800 and as I mentioned earlier, a 100mm macro lens ...

Re: Mojave Springtime
Thanks, Jeff. All these photos were taken with a 100mm macro lens, which I love to use even if it means I miss some shots. With the first Uta pic, I was able to slowly get very near him because I think he was more concerned with another male that kept approaching "his" rock. The same with ...

Mojave Springtime
It has been some time since I posted -- life gets busy from time to time -- but I did manage to get out to the Mojave this spring for a few day hikes to see what the winter rains had wrought. Here are a few photos from those trips: Male Zebra-Tailed Lizard, breeding colors [/img] https://c1.staticfl...

Re: Peruvian Amazon, July-August 2016
Thanks, and thanks for the ID advice, all! My only reference was an excellent, but 1994-vintage, edition of "Guide To The Frogs of the Iquitos Region, Amazonian Peru" by Lily O. Rodriguez and William E. Duellman. It was really useful to have along, although of course many of the species na...

Peruvian Amazon, July-August 2016
I haven't posted in awhile, but wanted to share a few of my photographs from a recent visit to Peru. On the first half of the trip I attended a macro-shooting workshop (Bugshot, a great group that does U.S. domestic as well as out-of-country workshops), then afterward a few of us went upriver, deepe...

Re: Guided herp tours Malaysia + good field guides?
I was in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, last year. I picked up three reasonably slender field guides -- "The Natural History of Reptiles and Amphibians In Sabah" by Robert F. Inger and Tan Fui Lian, "Lizards of Borneo" A Pocket Guide by Indraneil Das, and "A Photographic Guide To ...

Fall in Montana
Cold-blooded critters are starting to call it quits for the season in Montana, but I did spot some baby Western Terrestrial garter snakes (Thamnophis elegans) along a stream bank, and what I guessed to be mom nearby. These are images of one of the tiny young ones. (I've also thrown in a couple of in...

Hans -- the workshop was five days/four nights in Tawau Hills Park. Meals were provided, but not herps! We spent all day and much of the night hunting throughout the park and accompanying botanical gardens for whatever we could find. Everything was photographed in place, or moved only slightly for b...
Re: Borneo
Thank you -- Hans, for whatever reason the gecko was pretty cooperative. It let several of us shoot before scurrying up a tree. The G.grandis female I found during the day alongside a stream, and that night someone in our group found the big male in the same area. Perhaps it was because it was night...
Re: Borneo
Thank you. It was a great trip with many lucky finds. Happy to answer the camera gear question. Macro shooters I've met use all sorts of homemade or DIY techniques, so there are lots of effective (and very affordable) things to try, but it all comes down to using diffusion material held as far in fr...

Thanks all, it was a great trip. The Xenodermus was my favorite herp find, to be sure. Also, while I did use scientific names on my original Flickr posts, the photo info doesn't appear in the posts here, apologies. I will do a better editing job in future posts. And fwiw, here is my Borneo Flickr al...

Borneo
Hello -- I am a new member after having lurked a little in the past. Earlier this summer I was lucky enough to attend a macrophotography workshop in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, followed by a few days in the Danum Valley on my own. Below are a few of the herps I saw when I wasn't shooting arthropods! (W...
