Absolutely gorgeous pictures. Interesting coloration on that long-tailed--hypomelanistic perhaps? That blue ridge spring is a stunner too!

Re: And Then... I Found Myself In Ohio

Dang, I wish I'd known about this, could've given some pointers! Central OH has *lots* of good places for sallies (including tigers, spotted, eastern newts, slimies, longtailed, and even reds and rarely springs). Some decent places for milksnakes too. Looks like you had fun though!

Day tripping in west-central Indiana

After weeks of long nights and shut-in weekends finishing up my MA project (and an extremely long Chicago winter), I decided this past weekend to treat myself to a herping day trip somewhere outside of Chicagoland. Generally, my destinations are planned around salamander diversity; this one was no e...

fire in the Smokies

Does anyone know the extent of burning within the Great Smoky Mountains national park? I've had no trouble finding news about the horrific property damage, but a tougher time finding out which parts of the park are most affected--though I'm reading that one wildfire started at the Chimney Tops and s...

Re: quick improvements on a cheap point-n-shoot?

Progress! 06/04/16 Pseudotriton r. ruber photographed in Adams County, OH. Picture was taken in a deep ravine under heavy cloud cover, so lighting was dim. I used 1/6" exposure, f/3.4 aperture (chosen automatically iirc), and 400 ISO. Composition and lighting were much better than most of my pr...

I assume you mean both of those in the generic... I wish we had D. aeneus (and I've yet to find an A. barbouri)

Re: Ohio day trip locations.

While AndyKraemer is 100% right that the best diversity is in the far south/southeast, you'll still be able to find a lot of species that are rare to non-existent in MI (spring, long-tailed, red, marbled, and hellbenders, to name just a few) within a couple hours from the OH-MI border. Richmond Coun...

Re: quick improvements on a cheap point-n-shoot?

Thank you both for the suggestions, it really means a lot that you took the time to break it down point-by-point like that. Kevin, I *really* like your photos, particularly the two-lined, the treefrog glass frog, and the yonahlossee. The compositions really do pop very nicely, and the details on the...

quick improvements on a cheap point-n-shoot?

Hi, I'm relatively new to both field herping and photography, and am looking to greatly improve my photography skills. I'm familiar with some of the most basic tenets of composition (rule of thirds, visual flow, figure-ground contrast, etc.) and I've got a pretty solid idea of how most of my camera'...

blue sallies of Bemihjee Mini-soda

In the middle of this last July, I got a chance to go to the Bemidji, MN area for a family outing. When we weren't out tubing and wakeboarding (or in, getting rained out from tubing and wakeboarding), I took the opportunity to get out into the woods surrounding the cabin for some herping. Though the...

Re: Herper Bios

Hello all, my name is Ryan. I've sporadically lurked for awhile but never found the time to make a post until now. I'm originally from North Dakota, but relocated to central Ohio several years ago to do an M.S. in perceptual psychology at OSU (go bucks!!!). I've been a herper since about age 7, but ...
