Re: Early spring finds (Wisconsin)

Nice shots, looks like you have done quite well so far this Spring! I haven't been out much yet, opting to use my free time for fly fishing, but I have run across an Eastern Hognose already (first for me). I need to tag along with you herpping! :D

Re: Wisconsin Massasauga or Timbers Tips

my only advice is to learn as much about timbers/saugas as you can and then go out and look. if you are seeking dens as you should be i will not say anything. sorry, you are asking about a pretty sensitive topic, especially with SFD becoming a problem here in wisconsin. google maps can be your best...

Wisconsin Massasauga or Timbers Tips

I've lived in Wisconsin for about 8 years now, but I've never seen either of these native snakes. Granted I have never really gone out to properly look for them, but I would like to change that. I'm not asking for any exact locations or anything like that, just a general idea of where I could go to ...

Re: Costa Rica field guide - Recommendations?

Luckily Costa Rica is a popular destination for many reasons, and because of that there is no shortage of information in regards to your questions. Personally I would go in the wet season (May-Nov), but that's because frogs are my first love! This would also be considered the off season there for to...

Re: Hispaniolan Boa - Epicrates striatus

I mentioned to him the possibility of the smaller ones being a separate species, such as E. gracilis (Haitian Boa). E. gracilis only reach a max size of less than 4ft, but they are both similar in appearance.

Re: Hispaniolan Boa - Epicrates striatus

Excellent shots of a really cool species! Just a thought here - could those three smaller individuals be neonates/juveniles? From what I was told they were pretty good sized snakes (~4ft), but they certainly could have been juveniles. I'm not sure if this species is known to be found in groups like...

Re: Hispaniolan Boa - Epicrates striatus

That is a really cool observation. You and your brother might want to consider submitting it to Herpetological Review as a natural history note. I spent about a month in the DR in the 90s, and unfortunately the only Epicrates I saw had been killed. My brother has actually already submitted some dat...

Hispaniolan Boa - Epicrates striatus

My brother recently returned from a six month stint in the Dominican Republic doing research on woodpeckers. Among his many experiences there, this was one of the highlights of his trip. The Hispaniolan Woodpeckers make their nest in small colonies high up in the native palm trees. They carve out la...

Re: Some Frogs From the Dominican Republic - ID Please?

The pictures are kind of small, but http://www.caribherp.org/ has faunal lists for herps of the caribbean islands, some call recordings, and range maps on each island. There are quite a few species listed, but the range maps might help - http://www.caribherp.org/index.php?il=Dominican_Republic&...

Some Frogs From the Dominican Republic - ID Please?

Took a not so traditional trip to the Dominican Republic back in June, staying away from the tourist paradise of the Caribbean beaches. Among the abundant herptofauna I came across during my trip, these frogs that were found in Ebano Verde (altitude 800-1500m) near Jarabacoa still evade any identifi...

Lost Chameleon Found in England

I was watching the very poor match between Southampton and Manchester United yesterday and this came up. Crazy that it survived the weather there, it must not have been outside long, but who knows! http://www.itv.com/news/meridian/update/2014-12-08/lizard-shocks-pedestrians-after-falling-from-tree-i...

Out of curiosity mostly, I inquired on some pricing. Not surprisingly, being art, it isn't cheap. The Russell's Viper for instance is priced at a grand.

Well that was fun.

So the spot where I flipped the laterale was a pretty small reserve with several nice sized vernal ponds. I am really hoping to get out there in spring and find everything coming out from winter to breed!

Reptiles and amphibians have always been my one love, but I'm ashamed I don't get out more with the sole purpose of herping. This will change come spring however. Here are a few (crappy) pics from over the summer and fall here in Wisconsin. http://i.imgur.com/UBVPsEn.jpg Love these guys. http://i.im...
