Re: Borneo, Sarawak, Santubong snake compilation
So many awesome (and rare) snakes. Love the oligodons and calamaria. Wish I could have encountered more when I was in Borneo

Thanks Jeroen. No offense taken. Each photographer has his/her own taste

Re: Bagging snakes for photos?
After scanning this post, it seems most of you believe you can't get good photos without bagging snakes. I must emphasize that this is NOT true. I never had to bag because I've gotten publishable photos by just spending less than 5 minutes 'posing' the snake. And that doesn't mean prodding it with s...

Re: Asia Adventure Part 2: Borneo!
Wonderful pics Rupert. That sumatranus is rad.
Can those of you who bag snakes for several days tell me why you do it? I've never done it and really can't think of why.... I've gotten stellar photos by just spending a few minutes posing the snakes.

Re: Herp collecting surveys
Gerry: Yes I did talk to them about it, but their response gave me the impression that it was common practice (at least for their lab!), which is what prompted me to start this post in the first place. Great to know of the self policing in science. But just a follow up question: if the author was tr...

Re: Herp collecting surveys
Thanks for the helpful links. Yeah does sound pretty trollish now that I reread it, but it is an accurate description of my experience... they clearly didn't follow any humane treatment protocols and there was no limit to how many you could collect. Not saying that all collecting surveys are like th...

Re: Herp collecting surveys
Sorry, edited to make it sound nicer, though I'm still against specimen-ing unless there is a strong purpose. Most collectors euthanize their specimens in the field and prep them right there. That I can accept, but are you sure most collectors do that? Setting up a lab in the field takes time, effor...

Herp collecting surveys
Don't know if this topic has been brought up before, but I just want discuss scientific 'collecting surveys' for herps. From my own experience and talking with others, surveyers pretty much chuck every frog they find into ziplock bags. After a few weeks, bags stuffed with frogs are brought back to t...

Thanks Brian and Hans. Hans, it's the same setup that I used in Sarawak. Just a diffuser box on a flash.

Whoa awesome post! I'm kinda jealous how you managed to find all the snakes that I've been dying to find in Borneo, but haven't yet. It's cute how that king can be pet like a cat!

Re: Borneo Dispatches #80: The King and Us
Fantastic writing as always Hans. Sad to hear about the mistreatment of the cobra. That snake catcher should not be let off the hook! Stuffing the cobra in a cramped mesh cage with no food/water for several days is not the result of ignorance, but of carelessness and disrespect. If the guy can't ope...

Thanks Rupert. Some more pics here: http://samyuephoto.com/photos/page/search/sumatranus
I think the sumatran has gray eyes whereas P. sabahi has amber eyes. Could be completely wrong though!

New member, plus Borneo pics
Hi everyone I'm Sam. I've been lurking in FHF for some time and know a few members already, but never made the effort to join til now. To make this post more exciting, here are some photos from my recent trip to Danum Valley, Borneo. I've done research there before, camera-trapping mammals, and I mu...
