Re: Wisconsin Hognose observations 2020

They are pretty common throughout the state. They lay large clutches of eggs so it's not unusual to see a dozen or more young ones in the fall.

Re: My scariest experience while herping caught on video

I didn't mean god in any religious sense. I think you nailed it, I stepped on his turf (despite the fact that it's public land).
It really had nothing to do with me being on or off the trail, he didn't want me photographing one of "his" snakes.

Re: My scariest experience while herping caught on video

I believe this person suffers from the God complex—a psychological fantasy when someone perceives themselves as superior in every way to everyone else, and social rules don't apply to them. That in itself isn't terrible unless it is mixed with violent tendencies. When that happens, things get pretty...

Re: My scariest experience while herping caught on video

I was taking the video. The guy in the photo in the crime file was the dude wearing camo that was stalking me up the trail. He posted the selfie of himself holding a snake at a nature preserve. Not sure why he was so angry or why he took his aggressions out on the snake but I was seriously concerned...

Zombie Snake (The Eastern Hognose)

Recently, news outlets seized upon the most inflammatory term in an educational post about eastern hognose snakes and ran with it. This video highlights my observations of the so called "zombie snake" in Wisconsin in 2019. Unlike zombies, the eastern hognose is a fascinating and harmless c...

My favorite videos are of our animals "in situ" with little or no human presence.
Yeah, I think life list (field guide) type photos are fine, but I've always found videos that capture behavior to be much more interesting.

Russ, if you shoot with Canon I'd say the 100mm macro w/IS is definitely the route to go. It's pretty much the only lens I use in the field. Occasionally I wish I had something a bit wider with me.
