Re: Favorite herping camera

Oh yeah haha. I didn't think about that. Oops....Scott can move it, right? As for the lens, I haven't changed the stock lens for my camera. A nice lens can be so expensive. They aren't at the top of my purchase list, although those nikon VR-II's are looking pretty snazzy. I would get a Nikon 24-70 f...

Favorite herping camera

Hey guys! I've been seeing all these posts summing up the years haul, so I figured I'd start one about cameras. What is your favorite camera to use? What are some of your least favorite cameras that you have used? Personally, I am using a nikon coolpix l330. Its not the best, but it gets the job don...

Re: Herping Advice

Thanks for the answers! If anyone knows anything about constrictor flaviventris, heterodon nasicus (emphasis on them), masticophus flagellum, virginia valeriae, carphophis vermis, or obsoleta obsoleta (found some, but never when I was actually looking for snakes haha. was wondering if you all had an...

Re: Herping Advice

Forgot to mention. I heard that you can go around at night with a spotlight and they will be, on the branches. I didn't know if that was true. I heard that they kind of reflected the light. Does anyone have experience with this? What is your favorite way to find them?

Re: Herping Advice

so you may know where to start searching for holbrooki now, if you get my drift. -Gene Yep Yep I get you *Wink Wink* lol. I found that one, in the morning, so I should probably start going then. That is when I have most of my luck, although my favorite find was a very fresh DOR (ugh) catenifer sayi...

Re: Herping Advice

I have a friend who managed to bait a Red Salamander out of a burrow by wiggling a piece of leaf outside the entrance. I'm not sure how consistently that technique works, but it's worth a try. A grub or angleworm might work even better. Interesting. I will have to try that. I would probably scare i...

Re: Herping Advice

Those are extremely helpful answers! Thank you so much. For the salamanders and toads, how do I get them out of their burrows? Do I try to scoop them out, without damaging the burrow, of course, or is the only thing that I can do is leave them there and take a picture? If I use artificial cover, I c...

Re: Herping Advice

One other thing I would like to know about. Would it be possible for me to buy some plywood boards, sheet metal, or something of the sort and check those occasionally to see what I see? If so, what would be good materials to get, how should i set them up, and how often should I check them? It never ...

Re: Herping Advice

So here is my next big question, should I be stopping and looking in all the leaf litter, and every bush i see or is there some trick to tell if there will be anything, in the hiding spots. I.E. I walk from parking area to lake, back to parking, back to lake, and on the way back to parking again, I...

Re: Herping Advice

As far as Lizards, I am not sure what Oklahoma has off the top of my head, let alone any experience with those species (unless you have Green Anoles, Eastern Fence Lizards, 6-line Race Runners, or Broad Head and Five-line Skinks). We have all of those, except for broad head skinks (found one last y...

Wind is a drag - it handicaps you, deafens you.

I hear that. In Oklahoma we almost constantly have winds 10+mph

Re: Herping Advice

I know pretty much all there is to know about the behavior of the non-venemous snakes in America. I'm guessing that what you were getting at is that you have a pretty good idea, from reading books, where and when you are going to find snakes, but not so much luck finding them in reality. Thats's ex...

Re: Herping Advice

Hey, thanks for the quick replies guys. I live in mustang, Oklahoma (right outside okc). We have really strange weather out here, so my theory is that the reptiles and amphibians act strange too. I find ringneck snakes, in the hottest part of the day, during 90+ weather, on blacktop, after a month w...

Re: Snakes not present

Hey, thanks for the answers. There are already a bunch of boards (especially on my property). The problem is out here all the property is open with almost no lakes or tree cover. There are also tons of cows, which means people aren't really ok with people snooping around their property as it could s...

Snakes not present

Hey, I'm not sure if there are any snakes around my house. There are tons of mice and toads, so that means there is a lack of predators. There is also a surplus of cedar trees, which ,I'm sure most of you are aware, give reptiles RTI's. All i see is the occasional garter or black rat (last year actu...

Re: Panama Frogs - looking for ID help.

Bottom one looks like a Centrolenella prosoblepon, one above that looks like a Teratohyla Pulveratum, one above that I'm not too sure (maybe something of the scinax family?), the one above that not sure (maybe another scinax?), the blue spotted tree frog could be referring to Rhacophorus cyanopuncta...

Re: Road cruising tips

Ya i was gonna say that i see a lot more DOR in the morning (driving to store and what not) than i do at night. I am assuming it is better to cruise on blacktop rather than dirt road because the blacktop retains heat better than dirt roads (there are A LOT of dirt roads out where i live). Would dirt...

Road cruising tips

Hey guys, whats up! Due to my bad luck roughing it in the woods 8-) to find herps, i thought i would try my hand at road cruising. Some of my questions include, is it possible to go in the morning and not only at night? If so, what time? What are the preferred temps for certain times of day? What ti...
