Hello Again

Hi everyone, It's been a VERY long while since I last posted on this site. Since last year, I have been very busy with tests and college applications, followed by a quick SDSF survey with Lawrence and a few others. Then I was traveling for two months, returning only to immediately enter university. ...

Cool Unplanned Treefrog Picture

Hello all,

A few days ago I managed to find two treefrogs near each other, and I wanted to get them both in the same photo. I urged one over to the rock where the other was sitting, and it ended up posing. Thought I should share.

Hi everyone, Found a western pond turtle dead floating in a pond where there were many other turtles. It did not seem to have any exterior injuries, and it was not on a road (DIW - "Dead in Water"). I do not know much about turtles, so I don't know whether or not this needs to be logged (f...

Are those desperate animals, or typical spring verdure? Folks in the United States may not realize that you are at the latitude of middle Canada and southern Alaska! Typical. It's a little early for grass snakes and female adders but not for viviparous lizards and male adders both of which are occa...

Nice finds! The desert night lizard looks really cool, with the variation in plate/scale size below the neck. I need to come down south again and look for one sometime soon!

Arboreals; definitely my favorite gummy. Especially so, when they get beefy and megacephalic. This was the beefiest individual I've found, and measured 6 1/4" tl with a svl of 3 3/8". He was patternless too, which I much prefer to the spotted individuals. Can't speak to it's "signifi...

Identification of a Long-Dead Frog/Toad

Hi everyone, I found this one dead on the side of a dried-up canal. Is there any chance of identifying a half-decomposed frog? His head was maybe an inch to an inch and a half in length, and I couldn't tell you how long his body was, because, well, it was fused with a few rocks. http://i.imgur.com/c...

Brian, for an author (and marketer?), you do not read carefully enough. How did you not see my edit listed at the top of the post?! As for me, I do not have that book. I shall buy one. The guides I have do not list subspecies and the range maps suck more than a leech. It's partially my fault...

Ah, so then it would not be a young adult. Or would it be. At what point does one draw the line of adult, usually, in years of age for crotes?

Age of Crotalus oreganus helleri

Hello everyone, Being new to the world of herps, I am often confused on what is what. Recently, in a trip around SoCal, I found a Southern Pacific Rattlesnake which was quite small. It's neck was pencil thin, and I would like to determine whether it is a juvenile, young adult, or adult. I know that ...

Help with Lizard Identification Needed?!

Hello everyone,
I made a quick trip around SoCal recently and found this guy in the Western Mojave. He seems to have a single black band around his neck, and I have no clue what he is. Need to put him into the database.
Thanks a bunch,

Well, I'll stick with H. E. R. P. for now as well. After a pm and this reply, I see that it's not worth the risk. Speaking of H. E. R. P., I see people logging roadkill there all of the time. Thoughts on iNaturalist.org

I was thinking about joining iNaturalist.org for the global bioblitz, but I saw that I can find specific locales of posted herps (through maps). Since I know that this is frowned upon in the herping society, is this method of logging animals frowned upon as well? For now, I am only logging my entrie...

Thank you for the fast replies!

I'm going to be using the tongs to position the snakes for pictures.
As for the flipping rocks part, of course I put everything back to how it was. :)

I guess I'll order the 40"s, probably the Gentle Giant.
I'll give it a little more thought though.

Advice on First Tongs?

Hello everyone! I am fairly new to the official (I have caught snakes for fun for quite a while now) herping world. I built myself a snake hook, which is quite sturdy, and I used it to pick up a Northern Pacific rattler. He wasn't active at all because of the cold weather - no rattling, just slither...
