quote="chris_mcmartin"] I say for your big snake (or herp) year to be "official" every taxon you count has to be vouchered into the HERP database. We could make this a continual annual contest. That sounds a lot like the Big Year birders have from my understanding. Its a good ide...

Re: How would you schedule a snake Big Year?
Thanks for the input everyone. It seems like the common thread is: Arizona, Florida, W. Texas Illinois and Kansas making an honorable mention Schedule-wise then, I would assume; Arizona during the fall monsoons, W. Texas in June (Sanderson Snake Days!), Illinois/Kansas in the spring and Florida in F...

This summer, while browsing a used bookstore, I stumbled upon Chris Scott's Snakelover's Lifelist and Journal and thought it would be a fun project to begin recording the species I find from now on. Little did I know my "fun project" would quickly become an "obsessive distraction.&quo...

List of Herpetological events: symposiums, conferences, etc?
It has recently come to my knowledge I've narrowly missed some worthwhile herpetological gatherings; I was a mere 100 miles from the Biology of the Pitvipers Symposium stewing about how I've read all the herp literature I own and wished there was something else to read. I took my collapsible gentle giant tongs to Indonesia this year. Is this also Dekayi? I was thinking Virginia striatula when I found it. But the head seems more like a brown snake. It was found under the bark of a fallen log. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7382/9264820096_7f391bece4.jpg IMGP1119 by hollywoodtb , on Flickr http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/9264820...
