Turtle ID Canada

Found a pond in a large urban Victoria, BC park that had a bunch of red-ear sliders. The two on either side of this red-ear look different, any ideas if they are?

Re: Herping at Mary's Peak

Nice job on the finds! I'm thinking that is the mythical stripe-less dunni. I didn't find any at Mary's Peak but not too far south of there in northernmost Lane county I found these guys who look similiar; http://www.naherp.com/vouchers/202352-263097.jpg http://www.naherp.com/vouchers/180591-234283....

Re: Del Norte or Sisikiyou Mt. Salamanders?

Thanks! Although the third group pix are not good those sallies did have speckles like the other groups. I actually did run into some wildlife techs out there who had a sighting logbook of stormis and elongatus and this area was very close to a combined range habitat but was a little more dominated ...

Del Norte or Sisikiyou Mt. Salamanders?

I was fortunate enough to find some sweet sallies while in southern Oregon, just not sure if they are P. stormi or P. elongatus.. I found them in three different locations all in the hills surrounding the Applegate river valley, which is in the combined range zone for both. This first one was found ...

Re: It rained and The Giants emerged

Yeah these two were huge. The first one was the biggest probably round 13" the second was big too aprx. 10" It was a humid foggy 60ish degree day, just ideal. I was really surprised to just see them out walking around on top of ridgelines in some drier parts of the forest, not where I expe...

It rained and The Giants emerged

I've been hopefully searching for my first adult coastal giant salamander to no avail all year. The Oregon coast range finally got a decent rain storm to roll through for a few days and it brought all kinds of sallies out. The red-backs were everywhere, many walking around so conditions were prime. ...

Re: Herpin the Northwest--Summer 2014

Thanks everyone! Travis--I was leaning towards tiger sallies because I saw a couple of larvae that were 3-4" , I didn't know the long-toe's could get that big? Jimi--That's a cool study you got to do, I am fascinated with the affects of clearcuts on the forests, their short term impacts are fai...

Herpin the Northwest--Summer 2014

The Northwest had a beautiful summer and here in Eugene we set a record with most 90+ degree days in a year. I didn't get to herp out as much as I'd like to, but still managed a few herpin adventures. The Willamette Valley used to be one huge estuary, while modern day has drained much of the surface...

Re: Oregon Coast Range and Willamette Valley Spring Herpin'

Thank you Dr. Hoyer. Jonathan, it was about 4 miles NW through suburbia from where you found one. Jeff, there were no red markings at all, I really didn't know what it was when I saw it. Some interesting notes; First snake of the year found on Feb 24th on a drizzly 54 degree day. Huge rough-skin new...

Re: Awesome spot in my hometown - 4 species of snakes in 2 h

This is an awesome spot! I was able to check it out twice this spring both times bringing some great finds. A total of four rubber boas, one dead nothwestern garter, and a yellow-bellied racer were found, couldn't get a photo of the racer unfortunately as it aptly lived up to its name. http://www.na...

Oregon Coast Range and Willamette Valley Spring Herpin'

I've had a great Spring herpin' around Oregon taking advantage of the mix of rain and sun. It was awesome seeing the snakes making their way out to get some base tan action as well as a few sweet salamander and frog finds. The majority of my herpin' was in the Coast Range west of Eugene. While most ...

I like turtles

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMNry4PE93Y Much like the people of the northwest get out and thoroughly enjoy the sunshine whenever it hits, so do the turtles. Ever since I was seven and my pet turtle ran away I've always loved seeing some out and about secretly wishing one was my old friend. There...

Jan-Mar 2014- Salamanders Abound

Greetings, this is my first post and fittingly is about some of the salamanders I have found so far this year, which have been plentiful. I've become a big fan of http://www.naherp.com/ which has motivated me to search out herps during my nearly daily treks into the Pacific Northwest wilderness. My ...
