I was shocked to first learn of Phrynocephalus mystaceus about 2 years ago. I've been a lifelong herper, yet somehow this unforgettable species never entered my radar. We were really pleased to find an author working with them.

Re: Handling venomous snakes
Original question: Occasionally I see photos of people handling venomous snakes while herping....even when they have hooks and tongs....I feel it unnecessary to grab a venomous snake by it's tail because your risk of being bitten dramatically increases.... My question though, why do you risk contact...

Justin, we switched printers with issue 2.4, and your correct the stock is slightly less ridged, but we have better color consistency and more printing options available to us now (like metallics - notice the cover title). I am drooling with excitement about where we are going with the next few issu...

I completely agree that the second Tokay appear to be clearly defensive. Are Tokays territorial? If so I wonder if the attacker wouldn't have acted the same way if there was a snake in his territory with or without another Tokay being constricted. Really cool vid.

It seems like parthenogenesis has become a fairly common observation in captive snakes of many species over the last 10 years. I had it possibly occur once in my collection (20 years ago) with a northern Pine Snake reared from a hatchling. She became gravid and went way past term unable to deposit t...

Those videos were awesome! I've never seen a lizard use its hands like that, it seemed like I was watching a monkey, not a monitor. Really excellent observations.
Reminds me of other giant lizards...

That's because all the authors refer to one another when writing, Kind of like "secretive", that one you hear a lot too.Almost every single article, piece of literature, study or scientific journal refers to this species as 'cryptic"
