Unfortunately, I just saw this. I am curious how you did though? August is a tough time of the year in the lower state.

I have used the diffusers that come with the R1 kit, as well as the small plastic omni-bounces. They help a little, but aren't perfect. I wish there was any easier way to move the diffusers farther away from the surface of the flashes. Do you have specific examples where you used tbe SB700 and the R...

I'm a housing guy, but understand they aren't practical. I think a POS is your best bet for vernal pool and stream work. Having a small rig in shallow water is helpful. I lugged my housing out to a couple vernals last year and it was too big and cumbersome to do anything.

Pretty easy to find anywhere along the river and lake. Are you just looking to see them across the border or collecting more data?

Why even pose the question? It sounds like a complete no brainer to get outside. Whether or not I see any herps, I am excited to hike in any warm weather this time of the year, especially if the ground hasn't frozen yet... A herp is just icing on the cake. You won't know unless you try.

Your best best is to try one of the state forests, national forests, or state parks within 30 mins or so of Columbus. I don't mean to be a downer, but the end of July things are pretty hot and dry down there. I have also only seen them roadcruising in the spring, NW of Columbus. It can probably be done, but that is a pretty hard target out of season.

Correct, the D5300 flash unfortunately can not function as a commander. The SB700 can though. If I were you, I would start with the SB700, get used to that a bit, then get the R1 - No need for the C1 this way. If you go R1 first, you need the C1, but I find it impossible to believe you won't end up ...

Trey - I can understand your concerns. I would argue the NAFHA or herpmapper databases are a wonderful way to still input your data and control who has access to it. It is still all under your control? That being said, I know I don't put my MI or OH data up, so I guess I am a bit of a hypocrite. Jason

I keep my own database for MI and OH, which I have been doing for long before NAFHA. I tend to share this with the state officials directly. Do not waste money on the wireless flash commander, it just doesn't give you enough options. What I would recommend to maximize your options of flash control is actually to get 2 SB700s. A second sb700 is less than 100 more than the commander, and you get a second usable flash. The SB700 has a comma...
