Re: Gopher tortoise combat

Simus - did you notice at the end when the middle tortoise did a brief head bob? Do females bob, too? I was imagining the two on the mound were males. In any case, I do know now without doubt that the very small population isolated in our neighborhood is still reproducing, as I found a hatchling in ...

Gopher tortoise combat

I wanted to share a short video I shot on Christmas of some gopher tortoise interaction in the yard, and get some input. Two of the three tortoises in this video are "head-butting" and I am wondering if they are males fighting over a female. I have seen the head bobbing behavior before, bu...

Simus, I am very fortunate to live on a large river. I see 2 alligators regularly, and a variety of snake species, but usually only have my phone on me for pics, so I post more on FB and Instagram these days.

Kyle, those cottons were in a roadside ditch. There was a piece of plywood at the top of the ditch, which I flipped to find the smaller of the two you see pictured. It wasn't until that snake flipped itself down the bank that I noticed the big mama stretched out by the water. That got me looking aro...

This is pure speculation, but I wonder if poverty has anything do with it too. If you don't make much money, live in low cost rural areas with limited economic opportunity, and the tortoise is a cultural delicacy, why not take one now and again to put food on your table? I do not believe this to be...

Yes, Dave, sad but true. I wrote a newspaper article about this very subject last year. It is typically older black folks here in the south that still eat gopher tortoises. It's a way of life they never gave up, even when the tortoises were granted federal protection.

I agree - I find it sad that people eat turtles. They are one of my favorite critters! I honestly don't know all the laws here in FL about what turtles are legal to take, but I can tell you the gopher tortoise is protected and people still eat them.

Looks a bit extreme to be conjunctivitis. May be avian pox, but I'd think there would be more than one large lesion. It reminds me of the malignant tumors that guinea pigs get sometimes in old age. Pretty sad to see a wild animal afflicted like this. If you're concerned for the other birds, it defin...
