Re: 2 Months at La Selva, Costa Rica

Thanks for all the good words Cool herps, any more shots of antbirds? I suppose I can upload my bird photos and make a bird post sometime soon. I dont have many shots of the antbirds out of the hand because they are so skulky. I did get this video though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIjaqpjpT4E ~...

Re: 2 Months at La Selva, Costa Rica

Very cool post, I loved the diversity. But herping in the tropics with that head of hair must have been brutal, I would have shaved it off! Any stories of weird creatures living in your hair or it getting in your way? About two months after my work in CR ended, after doing a month's work in Venezue...

Re: 2 Months at La Selva, Costa Rica

WOW, that is a mind-blower, certainly among the very most thrilling neo-tropical posts. Lots of creative images. BUT, what kind of bird? Some kiond of Ant-shrike or some such thing? Chestnut-backed Antbird ( Myrmeciza exsul ) The Lampropeltis triangulum is amazing! hounderensis or some other obscur...

Thanks Chris. Looking through that website just makes me want to go looking for all those cool endemic geckos even more. The birds are another big draw :D

2 Months at La Selva, Costa Rica

This spring I spent April and May studying these guys in Costa Rica: http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/slybirdsly/Costa%20Rica/La%20Selva/D009-041910d.jpg My work was entirely at La Selva Biological Station, and I accrued a nice little collection of sightings despite very little time devoted ...

RFI: New Caledonia and New Zealand

I'm thinking about planning a birding/herping trip to Australia, New Caledonia, and maybe New Zealand early next year. Has anyone herped NC or NZ? I don't remember any posts from there on the pre-crash forum. Anyone have pictures to post or advice to share?

Thanks,
Nick

Awesome post!

Just a quick note - your motmot is Broad-billed, not Rufous.

Re: In which I meet the Leviathan

One of the best posts in the history of the forum. Thanks a lot and great photos (which were probably not that easy to get!) All I did was stick my point-and-shoot through the railings and take a few snaps while trying not to be trampled by whale-watchers. It was hard to take pictures at all ...

Re: In which I meet the Leviathan

Was it feeding on Jellyfish at the surface? No, it dove out of sight, and we circled around looking for it. We did see one jellyfish on the surface. I want to say this was in 100-150ft of water. Throw in a few seabird photos and this would be the perfect post! I haven't uploaded my other trip photo...

Re: In which I meet the Leviathan

Thanks, all :) Unbelievable. second time today someone from that pelagic trip has (to use birder terminology) gripped me off by posting shots of that turtle provoking insane jealousy. Corey - is that you??   Nope, I'm the 'derelict with degree' Nick that joined him for this adventure.

In which I meet the Leviathan

This past weekend I took a whale-watching trip out of Montauk, Long Island in the hopes of seeing some cool seabirds (we did - 3 species of shearwater, 2 new for me) and maybe some whales (we didn't). This post isn't about seabirds or whales. On the way back in towards shore after almost 6 hours at ...

Re: 4 months in the llanos

After seeing a shedload of stuff after just 4 days in the Llanos I can't imagine how much stuff you'd connect with in 4 months. Any cats or big mammals? how big do those caimans get? The caiman I saw were pretty small Nick (although the Orinocco Crocs were monstrous things) - 8 feet odd tops. The O...

Re: 4 months in the llanos

Okay... Frogs!!! I made an effort to film as many species calling as possible. I ended up with seven species on film, view them here: YouTube - Frog Calls of the Llanos Bufo (Chaunus) (Rhinella) granulosus First anuran I found on the ranch. Fairly common http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/slyb...

Re: 4 months in the llanos

On to turtles… Podocnemus vogli This is the most abundant turtle encountered on the ranch. They're in every decent body of water and I frequently encounter them basking. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/slybirdsly/Venezuela/Herps/P1190895.jpg http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/slybirds...

4 months in the llanos

This is a repost of a pre-crash forum post, updated with some more recent pictures of Corallus from 2010. I spent three months in the fall of 2008 and one month this summer working on the cattle ranch Hato Masaguaral in the llanos of Venezuela, studying parrotlets. I’m not going to put much narrativ...

The crocodiles of Masaguaral

This is a repost from the pre-crash forum. I finally got signed back up here and I figured I’d try to dig up a handful of my best posts from the past. In fall 2008 I spent a three-month stint studying parrotlets in Venezuela. During my time I stayed at a cattle ranch called Hato Masaguaral, located ...

Re: I drove 300 miles one day...

At least you didn't get skunked. ;) We got skunked on every other target species (at least 4 other cool species I was hoping for). Nice looking long tail. Are they a big deal to find in New York? Yeah... northern limit of their range, scattered and local. This is the only population I've found so f...

Re: Speckled Kingsnake (?)

I'm only jumping in because I'm a total bird-nerd. But now we're not going by Steve's definition of a species anymore, because black-backed gulls and herring gulls DO NOT interbreed in the wild even though they occupy the same territory, yet they are both part of the same ring species complex. This ...
