Herper of the Month
April 2007
Robert Edwards

"Reptiles have been a huge part of my life for many years, and will probably fill the rest of my life as well. From the time of childhood I chased nearly every critter that crawled along the 2 acres that I grew up on. The muddy ditches, slimy lake, and flat plains of the Amarillo area; it really did not matter I would spend as much time as I could searching for snakes, lizards, frogs, and turtles. Visions of catching my first horned lizards, whiptails, and milk snakes outlast many other memories from childhood."

"If not for the help of several individuals giving their own direction and knowledge, I would not be where I am today. At the age of 16 I met a good friend that had an entire room of snakes and turtles. Although I probably know a great deal more about herps now, Mike Terry was probably my first friendly connection into the world of herps. He showed me how to identify animals using field guides and how to catch the nastiest of Texas rat snakes without getting an arm full of teeth."
"A few years later I discovered the East Texas Herpetological Society, a non-profit organization committed to educating the public about reptiles in the area. Along with many people within that group and several other good friends across the country I branched my knowledge of herps into many directions."

"Currently I devote most of my free time to herp related activities. Although I enjoy keeping a small collection of herps, I get even more excited for herping trips and field photography. My Lowerpro backpack filled with canon gear is never too far away. I am glad I waited for the digital technology put out over the last couple of years rather than that from five or six years ago."

"Today I live just outside the Houston area with my wife Melissa and lab puppy. She has the unbearable task of living with over 100 snakes; mostly venomous rattlesnakes. I feel extremely fortunate to have a caring wife who will put up with everything involved with my animals and lifestyle."
