Herper of the Month
November 2007
Donald Becker

"My earliest herp experience that I can remember was when I was four or five years old. We lived accross the street from West Lake Park near Davenport, IA. There was an old wooden truck topper in our apple trees when we moved in, and we climbed on it until it collapsed. A while later, we were picking up the boards, and there were dozens of garter snakes under them. I remember thinking that the ones with red on them were ribbon snakes, and the ones without were the garters. Not long after, I realized that the line of railroad ties at the near by park were also always full of garters. I used to catch them with my friends just to put them in the grass and watch them slither around. The next 15 years or so was filled with various random encounters with herps, but I never put any serious effort into finding them."

"I moved to Cedar Rapids with my now wife, when I was 19. I worked at a retail store for a few years, but eventually quit and started working from home. Computers had been my hobby until this point, but when they became my job, I needed a new hobby. I found one of the local nature centers online, and started hiking the trails out there. I just took casual hikes, and hoped to see things along the trails. One day while I was out hiking with my brother, I had my first experience with a Bullsnake, and a large one at that, it was around seven feet long. That experience is what really got me hooked."
"My hikes turned from casual to very planned and focused. I started looking up information on the local animals, hoping it would help me find more. I found Jeff LeClere's site, Herpnet.net, which provided alot of information about the herps in Iowa, and really helped me out. More searching turned up HerpJournal.com, run by two guys who lived in my area. Seeing Jim and Matt's reports from around my area motivated me to get out even more. Their site eventually led me to FieldHerpForum.com."
"The best part was meeting the other people, and actually getting out into the field with them. The forums also inspired me to try to take better photos of the animals I saw. When I started seeing NAFHA being discussed, especially the database, I wanted to help with it. Everyone on FHF had helped me out by answering all my questions, and giving me pointers, that I figured it was a good way to
contribute something back."
