"I
was born and raised in the small town of Ridgecrest which is in
the northern Mojave desert of California. My brothers and friends
spent much of our free time chasing, and occasionally catching,
the local lizards. We targeted snakes as well, but they were harder
to come by. When I was seven years old I received a copy of Stebbins's
field guide for Christmas which fueled my interest." |

  |
| "Since
then I have lived in Santa Barbara and Pasadena in California,
Hillsborough in North Carolina, and since 2001 in Athens, Ohio.
Nowadays I am a physics professor at Ohio University. Herpetology
has proven to be the "perfect" hobby for me. It combines
together a number of interesting scientific issues, the thrill
of the hunt, and time spent out in the field with family and friends." |

 |
"My
wife Roxanne and son Ryan enjoy this activity as well. Our vacations
usually have a herping component, particularly when we return
to California to visit relatives. I have a fond spot in my heart
for the desert lizards of California."

"My primary
herpetological focus at the moment is the species which occur near
where I live in southeast Ohio. I am lucky that there are so many
neat areas to explore which are within an hour's
drive from my house. I am particularly interested in the distributions
of animals and associated questions (e.g., habitat requirements
and biogeography). I make it a point to take notes and I also maintain
a database to keep track of photographs and localities." |

 |
"I've
met many great people through this hobby. Jason Folt deserves particular
mention since he's a great guy and we've been able to spend a lot
of time exploring southern Ohio together over the past
several years.” |
